Pastor Matt was called to serve as pastor of Mayhill Baptist Church on March 12, 2017, and began his preaching ministry there on April 2, 2017. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Christian Studies with an emphasis in Church Ministry from Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas in August 2006, his Master of Divinity (MDiv) in Theology from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in May 2017, and graduated with his Doctor of Ministry (DMin) in Church Revitalization from SWBTS in May 2021. Before being called to MBC, Pastor Matt had served in a variety of roles in a variety of contexts for over 20 years.

He is a recording artist, having recorded two albums of hymns for a project called My Hymnbook, co-hosts Not Another Baptist Podcast and The Potluck Podcast, co-authored Replanting Rural Churches and The People Walking in Darknessauthored Path to P.E.A.C.E.Evangelize to Revitalize, Text-Driven InvitationJonah Over Coffee, God Can Save Me?!and is currently writing Nahum Over Coffee, 1-3 John Over Coffee, Field Guide to Church Revitalization, Thick Skin, Soft Heart, and will be publishing his dissertation, A Pastor-Led, Member-Fulfilled Disciple-Making Strategy, soon. He is also a frequent guest speaker and regularly contributes to blogs.

In addition, Pastor Matt serves the Southern Baptist Convention in a variety of capacities. With the Mountain Valley Baptist Association, he leads church planting efforts and was recently selected to serve on the search committee for MVBA’s next AMS. He previously served as one of the worship leaders and preached the annual sermon in 2019. With the Baptist Convention of New Mexico, he was first elected as the 2nd vice president in 2018, and then again in 2019. In 2020, he was elected as 1st vice president. He previously served student leaders at Camp Inlow during the Worship 4 Life Camp and preached for Young Lives Ablaze, a youth conference in 2021. With the Southern Baptist Convention, he served as the managing editor of LifeWay Pastors from 2018-2020, and was chosen to serve on the Credentials Committee at the 2019 Annual Meeting in Birmingham. Additionally, he was selected as a member of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission Leadership Council for 2020-2021 and is a consultant with the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Center for Church Revitalization. Lastly, he is the President of the 2022 SBC Pastors' Conference in Anaheim.

Matt’s heartbeat is for his local church, everyday evangelism, and encouraging pastors in the trenches of ministry in forgotten places. He lives to see churches grow not just in width, but in depth, as they live out their calling to make disciples. He is married to Rebecca Henslee and they have four daughters they adopted in March 2015, four dogs, and a giant elk head on the wall they named, “Cletus.”
